Dong Qichang (1555-1636), courtesy name Xuanzai, pseudonym Siang Guang, alias Sih Bai, Sih Wong. Dong Qichang was a native of Hua Ting, Songjiang district (located in modern day Shanghai). His great-grandmother, Mrs.Gau, is the descendant of a Yuan famous painter, Gao Kegong.
Dong Qichang advocated the “Shih Chi” of literati paintings, praised that “travelling brings about far greater benefit than mere book learning.”, pursued the aesthetic of “Sheng, Jhuo, Jhen, Dan”. “Theory of South and North School”, based on Four Masters of the Yuan dynasty, has constructed the aesthetic system of literati paintings for more than four hundred years after it, which indicates that it made a far and deep influence.
